well, let's see. it's been 9 months. you can tell i'm back to doing nothing again because i have officially started a new post for this 'blog.' it was a great summer, solid, way less stressful than 09, with next year only looking better...
just got a lovely cookbook from the girls at the red onion:) they are so sweet to me. can't wait to start diving in to recipes.
i was thinking about taking the northern latitude cookbook with me to maui. that could make for some interesting fusion cuisine.
interesting things i have made lately- lentil escarole soup- so cheap, SO good.
pistachio ice cream. couldn't make enough of this.
broiled deviled chicken.......
and lots and lots and lots of variations of ramen:) i can't wait to start stocking up the asian side of my pantry for the coming summer...
i have also made serious cut backs in my meat intake... read 'eating animals' by a lovely new father whose name i can't remember right now and i can't eat that commercial meat shit without thinking about sad sad turkeys and pigs:( so, i've taken to craigslist and buying meat out of the trunk of this really nice guys' car.
my next step is to somehow force chickens on my mom and sister...

frakkin frakkety frak
ugh. i hate banks, but i really hate wellsfargo. sat on hold this morning... sat and sat and sat. wanted to make sure they really had the right address on file for this stupid identity theft case. which they did, and could not explain why my paperwork had all gone to lake forest park. not helpful. at all. i still want a drink!
stupid stupid money. stupid people.
waiting for utah to get back to me about foodstamps... more sitting on hold. couldn't find my stupid spanish phrase book. got all frustrated trying to scan a picture in... really low on patience today. not a hospital.
but! yesterday was great, met pilar, had a nice lunch at a place i felt really good about eating at... had a couple beers at a divey bar... the first beer in two weeks, and it was natural ice HA! it was good, i don't care who you are.
made some pasta, which i discovered is so much more pleasant to do in dry climes.
made some kick ass veg lasagna.. i haven't eaten meat in 17 days!
making some asiany style broth for noodles tonight... got a bunch of weird stuff from the vinh long grocery. I AM SO CRANKY TALKING ABOut FOOD ISN'T HELPING. i can't even finish this right now, go to hell.

it's over! my brain feels fresher and i feel cleaner! it's time to eat again!
on to drinking OJ. i would master cleanse again. but when i stop to think about it (shut up, you) it's nearly impossible for me to do any month but january or febraury. if i'm cooking, i have to be able to taste it.
but this hiatus from cooking/eating has let me explore some new books, follow recipes wherever they might take me across the web, and watch cooking shows at midnight on the create channel with the most vague but cute norwegian lady on a boat in a fjord.
with that said, i have been thinking about this menu for awhile now. about 4 days, actually... but i like where it's going and hope i find an excuse to make this much food. did i mention i applied for foodstamps?
three onion free form tart with proscuitto or bacon
celeriac and fennel soup with thyme croute
winter vegetables with a parsley sauce
black cod with mushrooms on puy lentils and carrots
oxtails braised in red wine with bay leaf polenta
carrots and chard with lemon olive oil? or lemon vinaigrette
new potatoes and garlic with bacon(?) (curried?) creme fraiche
some kind of poached pear ice cream cookie dessert...
i thought about a bitter salad instead of the winter veg, but haven't been able to settle on anything. also considering anchovies in the tart, but i know everyone doesn't like them.
it's very rich, but i'm really excited to start trying out recipes. apparently seapac has a distribution center in salt lake, and rumour has it they let the average joe buy there... cross your fingers.
also really high on my list of things to make is tacos de lengua! sounds so good right now and i want to prove to myself i can skin a cow tongue and not puke. sounds like not too much work, but maybe time consuming to shred the meat.
the OTHER thing i really want to make that i've been thinking about for 3 days is tortellinis en brodo... the mario batali recipe on food network... there is *so* much meat in it! it's almost all meat. i'm game. it sounds REALLY labor intensive. if you would like to come over to eat it, you will have to roll some tortellinis with me:)
ok, ONE OTHER thing i reaallllyy want to make is a traditional lasagna. i've been looking at recipes eeevvverywhere and i want to make the sauces and the bolognese and the pasta all from scratch (no prob, bob!) and if i could, i'd grow the spinach too. i like the giada recipe on foodnetwork and also a random mario batali recipe...

south american gentleman's companion
well, this is day 5. i had horrible time trying to sleep last night, so around 5 i gave up and i think it was about 730 when i finally fell asleep. the sun was ready to come into the window. i wasn't thinking about food perse, but i was definitely having cravings of some kind.
today was good, rolled some raspberry cordial chocolates with dave's dad. talked about food all day, thought about food all day. (this is normal for me, it's what i do.) went to ye olde malle to the used book store and got some new audio books. chuck palahniuk and laura ingalls wilder. there was also a steve martin that i wanted, but it was too expensive.
also, i found this book south american gentleman's companion from 1951 that i can't WAIT to dig in to... two volume set. click the link above to look at it. i only paid ten bucks!! i really hope it was mis priced, i can't find it on amazon for less than 75. not that i'm selling. i also found a pristine james beard outdoor cookery from 1960 and a greens cook book from 1980s san fran. i guess i'm still fooling myself into thinking i'll be a healthier person when this fast is over.
the mall was really hard. poor dave had to go through the foodcourt to pee and the chinese buffet was handing out free samples. being in public exposed to all that food was really trying.
dave and i concur, this is by far the least characteristic thing either of us has ever done in our entire lives. whatever, i feel good. i just want to taste stuff... we were also debating having a feast of excess on the last day and just puke it all up. just kidding. but we did talk about it.
george got in the jordan river today. my sense of smell is so sensitive right now i could smell him when he walked in the door from the back room. someone is getting a bath tonight. i will take pictures because screwing with george is one of my favorite pastimes at the moment.

senna tea and sea salt
i talked to the lovely and talented saskia yesterday. she is leaving for costa rica in just *4* days and we thought we should touch base before we have to pay per minute. justin was making ribs on the bbq. i hope we can do that in cr... that man treats meat right! (can you tell i have not eaten since monday? couldnt last 3 lines without talking about food.) i simply cannot wait to be in warm climes with two pretty girls. and dave and justin. although i wonder what theyre going to do down there, haha.
so this is day three of the cleanse... it isn't so hard to not eat, really. not as i hard as i originally thought. of course, i am constantly thinking about food, and trying to figure out what my first meal will be, what my second meal will be... but really, i'm enjoying it. my sense of smell is crazy good... and i know food is gonna taste sooooo good when i get to eat for real again. the only gross thing is the lax tea and salt water flush. i don't know how i'm going to gag that down. you're supposed to do it every morning of the cleanse, but i don't see why that's necessary. i'll do it three or four times... but really, the senna tea is plenty for this girl. ok, sorry, tmi. let you know how tomorrow goes...

2010: seattle, eugene, burns, the mucc, slc
well, after a long stint in seattle (i don't know why it pains me so much) we've finally left for salt lake city. it was a good two months, the weather was decent, the house had heat for the most part. the people are great, the food is great, working at the cooking school is so good for me (at least for the first month) because i get to stretch my legs a little and do more than worry about the chx salad getting seasoned properly. plus, i kinda like some of the people there... sometimes.
left seattle monday afternoon after packing up the house on 67th and repacking for slc and costa rica...i think we did it all in 3 hours. little to no traffic on the way to eugene, got to kyla's right as she was pulling dinner out of the oven. she's really showcasin the talent these days... last time she cooked, we had ALL meat. this time we had ALL veggie... it was still amazing! best eggplant parm ever... except i want some crispy bits showing through the sauce. a good lead in for the master cleanse. so then we went out to some bars with novelty sex machines in the bathroom.... and then some other bars with novelty sex machines in the bathroom... i mean, you know, french ticklers, not a sybian, to clarify. and then we went to the blind pig where a tweaker told us he had down syndrome and that's how his teeth came out. YEAH RIGHT.
so the next morning, darling laura girl wakes us up with breakfast in bed, and it smells so good, except i'm not eating anything cooked anymore... dave ate the bacon. we got a lot of raw juice and fruit from the red barn, then headed to grass roots. amazing! what an amazing place... i wish we could have stayed for lunch. after a quick tour we hit the road...well, we hit A road, we missed the 126 for a few miles, and ended up a bit farther south than planned, but didn't lose much time... then we got to bend. we got turned around 4 times, i think. seriously. worst street signs ever. EVER. EEVVVEERRRR....
anyway, pull up to crystal crane hot springs on the 78 s of burns... soak for an hour or so (only a buck!!) in really nice 103 degree water. some obno teens, but the pool is big enough you can escape them. back in the truck, on to winnemucca. wow, winnemucca. wow. there's nothing to do there. nothing. it was so dismal... of course, we decided to stay at the cheapest hotel possible. twenty seven dollars... and it wasn't even worth that much. the toilet was running. no, the toilet was RUNNING. (i would be running if i lived in winnemucca, too... ) water was just pouring out, like the sink was on, that's how loud it is... on second inspection, the toilet is actually tunneling out of the bathroom, a verifiable escape route. like, 8 inches down already... then there's this mysterious stain on the carpet, dave says puke, it looks like glue to me... tweakers? ya. or really drunk people. found a mystery pill on the ground, put in the microwave. george kept sniffing the carpet. hair in the bed. grossest motel ever. definitely worth the experience.
well, didn't sleep in there, needless to say. back on the road at a very reasonable hour, only to stare at the very dismal nevada landscape (which was still pretty) and then the even more bleak salt flats. all this while listening to 'the mayflower' unabridged.
dave is happy to be home, i'm happy to back, george LOVES the snow. he got out of the truck and started sprinting figure 8s while simultaneously eating snow... so cute.
so now it's day one of the real fast. i'm shooting for seven days. i can do it.
as long as howard doesn't get me with chocolates.
